My
story chosen by John Grisham as second place winner to appear in August
14 issue of the HooK. “Dancing on the Ledge” was
one of the three top winners in the annual fiction contest, and Grisham
also chose one of my stories as the third place winner. The first
time this has ever happened in the history of the HooK contest. Read
the story in the August 14 issue, online through the HooK website
or watch for my blog entry with the link.
An
Introduction to White Lies
A
mother’s worst nightmare, Lacy Kellam’s
three month-old son Danny stops breathing one June
morning in
1969. The doctors never tell her what caused his seizures
or the permanent brain damage that follows.
For three
and a half decades government-mandated vaccinations have sent thousands
of infants into seizures and encephalitic shock, leaving many brain
damaged and handicapped for life. Danny Kellam is one of those babies.
Lacy, though, takes her grandmother’s mountain wisdom to heart
and never gives up seeking an answer.
Engaging
and upbeat despite childhood poverty and abuse, Lacy manages with feisty
determination and quick humor, to hold her own against the seasoned
Justice Department lawyer. A tale of courage and perseverance, White
Lies offers understanding and hope to the myriad families who live with
vaccine-injured children.

Second
Novel Publication Date Set
For
those of you who remember the Waltzing Cowboys excerpt
that won the 2004
HooK fiction contest, he's back. Publication date for my second novel
has
been set for January 2009.
Aging cowboy Rhue Hogan can’t remember falling off the wild mare,
but the
leg cast and the burial of his best friend are enough to send him back
to
New York City to find the son he’s never met. When his son 40 year-old
Ford
Hogan leaves the city to bury his mother’s ashes, he invites Evie
Newton, a
young woman he barely knows, to help him explore his Puritan roots. As
Ford
and Rhue chase their private demons, a midget psychic, two juvenile
delinquents, a boy fisherman, and a cynical detective come to the rescue.
Entranced by a desire to love and be loved, but scared of commitment, both
father
and son dance around the possibility of redemption until they discover
that heartfelt words have the power to build bridges.
Copley
News Review Spreads Across Country
The
July 3rd Copley News Service review of White Lies has been reprinted
from Bend, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Like the AP wire,
newspapers as subscribers to the Copley service use the review in
their own book sections. The review says, in part: "White Lies
is a brilliant debut by a fine new novelist, a rare gem - a superbly
written
tale that deals with the sorts of things that matter most in life.
. . It may well become a source of pride for those of us who will
one day be able to say that we discovered Sarah Collins Honenberger
before
her second and later novels made her famous."
